In July 2020, the E-Invoice Promotion Association (EIPA) was founded to standardize e-invoice specifications for Japanese businesses. E-Invoicing Requirement
Starting October 1, 2023, Japan will require qualified invoices for tax purposes, which can be exchanged electronically using the Peppol network, as recommended by the Digital Agency of Japan.
Registration and Procedures
To issue a qualified invoice, a company must register with the Tax Authority and obtain a 14-digit Japan Consumption Tax (JCT) code.
Invoice Format
The accepted format for electronic invoices is the PEPPOL BIS Standard Invoice JP PINT.
Electronic Signature
Not required for electronic invoices.
