Three steps to the right code
Choose your code system
India uses HSN for goods and SAC for services. UNSPSC is used across Peppol and ZATCA. The EU uses HS/CN. Pick the one your invoice format requires.
Choose what you sell
Open the product list and pick the closest match. Items are grouped by chapter or category and sorted alphabetically, so the right one is easy to find.
Get the code and tax rate
Each result shows the code, description, hierarchy, and applicable tax rate — copy it straight into your invoice.
What classification codes are, and why your e-invoice needs one
What a classification code is, and why your e-invoice needs one
Every e-invoice has to say what you sold in a way a tax authority's system can read. That is the job of a classification code: instead of free text like 'laptop', you attach a standardized number that maps to a known category and, in most countries, a tax rate. Authorities use these codes to validate the rate you charged and to flag mismatches. Get the code wrong and the invoice can be rejected outright.
HSN, SAC, UNSPSC and HS/CN
HSN (India, goods) is the Harmonized System of Nomenclature, extended to 8 digits for GST. SAC (India, services) is a 6-digit code that always starts with 99. UNSPSC is an open, four-level global taxonomy for goods and services — the choice for Peppol UBL and accepted by Saudi Arabia's ZATCA. The EU Combined Nomenclature (HS/CN) builds on the same 6-digit HS base, plus two EU digits, and feeds XRechnung, Factur-X and Intrastat.
How many digits you actually need
In India, e-invoicing generally needs at least 6-digit HSN. Peppol/ZATCA use the full 8-digit UNSPSC commodity code, and the EU CN is 8 digits. When a product fits more than one category, classify by its primary function — a phone case with a built-in battery is still a phone accessory, not a battery.

Common questions
What is an HSN code?
HSN stands for Harmonized System of Nomenclature, an internationally standardized system from the World Customs Organization used to classify traded goods with a 6-digit code. India extends it to 8 digits for GST. Every physical product has an HSN code that determines its GST rate.
What is the difference between HSN and SAC codes?
HSN codes classify goods, the physical products you can ship. SAC codes classify services, such as consulting, transport, or software development. HSN codes are typically 4 to 8 digits; SAC codes are always 6 digits and start with 99. Both are required on GST invoices to determine the correct tax rate.
How many digits should an HSN code have on an e-invoice?
It depends on turnover. Businesses above Rs 5 crore must use 6-digit HSN codes, and 6 digits are the practical minimum for e-invoicing. Businesses between Rs 1.5 and Rs 5 crore use 4-digit codes. Below Rs 1.5 crore it is optional but recommended.
What is UNSPSC and when do I need it?
UNSPSC is the United Nations Standard Products and Services Code, a global 8-digit taxonomy covering both goods and services. You need it for Peppol UBL e-invoices and it is accepted by Saudi Arabia's ZATCA in the ItemClassificationCode element. It is the most portable choice when you operate across multiple countries.
Is a classification code mandatory on e-invoices?
Yes, in most mandates. India's IRP requires the HSN or SAC code and cross-checks the tax rate against it. ZATCA requires an ItemClassificationCode on every UBL 2.1 line item. Peppol and the EU formats (XRechnung, Factur-X) carry it in the BT-158 element. A missing or invalid code can cause rejection.
What happens if I use the wrong code?
You may charge the wrong tax rate, which leads to short payment or overpayment. Input tax credit can be denied if codes do not match the supplier's return. E-invoices can be rejected when the code is invalid or the rate does not match the code. Correcting it usually means issuing a credit note and a revised invoice.
How do I find the right code if my product fits multiple categories?
Classify by the primary function of the product. A phone case with a battery is still a phone accessory, not a battery. Compare the descriptions of related codes and choose the closest match. For genuinely ambiguous cases, most tax authorities offer a binding advance ruling process.
Where does the data in this tool come from?
This free tool uses a curated, representative sample of the most-searched codes per system, based on WCO HSN, India's GST schedule, the UNSPSC taxonomy, and the EU Combined Nomenclature. It is for quick reference, not tax advice. The complete, regularly-updated database is built into the Complyance platform.
Does this tool send my searches anywhere?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser. The dataset is embedded in the page and all matching happens locally on your device. Nothing you type is uploaded, and no signup is required.
