1. What GEBA is and who published it
On 18 December 2025, XStandards for Purchasing (XStandards Einkauf) announced the publication of documentation for the German Electronic Business Address (GEBA). GEBA is a national electronic addressing scheme designed to uniquely identify economic operators in Germany for electronic business data exchange, particularly within the Peppol network. The announcement is available here (German): GEBA now online – XStandards Einkauf.
2. How GEBA works and why it matters
GEBA enables unambiguous identification, discovery and routing of electronic documents such as e‑invoices, helping systems correctly locate and address senders and receivers in digital flows. It is built on the German Business Identification Number (Wirtschafts‑Identifikationsnummer, W‑IdNr) and is flexible enough to model complex internal company structures, for example different branches or units within a single legal entity.
Use of GEBA is voluntary, so businesses can adopt it alongside other addressing systems they already use. In functional terms, GEBA is comparable to France’s “FRCTC Electronic Address” scheme, since both support unique participant identification and document routing for processes like e‑invoicing.
Because GEBA provides a consistent national addressing layer, it may also be an enabler for a future 5‑corner DCTCE model in Germany, where the tax authority becomes an additional “corner” in the exchange flow for reporting and oversight. This would support more advanced CTC‑style controls without changing the basic business‑to‑business document exchange pattern.
