Does e-invoicing change VAT return filing in Oman?
Table of Contents
E-invoicing changes how invoice data is created, validated, exchanged, and reported through the Fawtara network. It does not, by itself, remove a taxpayer’s obligation to file VAT returns under the existing rules. OTA continues to require VAT returns to be submitted within the applicable deadlines.
Accurate e-invoice data can help finance teams reconcile sales, purchases, output VAT, and input VAT before preparing a return. However, businesses should not assume that sending invoices through Fawtara automatically completes the VAT return or guarantees that the return figures are correct. Taxpayers still need to review the VAT treatment, account for relevant transactions, and reconcile invoice records with their accounting system and return.
Build a regular reconciliation process between Fawtara statuses, the sales and purchase ledgers, customs records, credit and debit notes, and the VAT return. Investigate missing invoices, rejected documents, duplicates, and differences in tax amounts before filing.
Key points
- Continue filing VAT returns: E-invoicing does not replace the existing VAT return obligation.
- Reconcile before filing: Compare invoice data with accounting records and VAT calculations.
- Review adjustments and imports: Include credit notes, debit notes, customs records, and applicable reverse-charge transactions.
- Investigate exceptions: Resolve rejected, missing, or duplicated documents before finalising the return.
