New ZUGFeRD 2.3 hybrid e‑invoice format released
ZUGFeRD 2.3 adds interoperability with the French B2B e‑invoicing mandate and allows rounding differences in the EXTENDED profile. Update recommended for all users.
1. What is new in ZUGFeRD 2.3?
On 18 September 2024, ZUGFeRD version 2.3 was released as an update to the German hybrid e‑invoice standard used in both national and cross‑border contexts. ZUGFeRD is developed by FeRD (the German Electronic Invoice Forum) in cooperation with FNFE‑MPE (the French Electronic Invoice Forum), combining a human‑readable PDF with embedded structured data.
Version 2.3 introduces changes to the EXTENDED profile specifically to ensure interoperability with the French B2B e‑invoicing mandate, which relies on structured data compatible with France’s new e‑invoicing and e‑reporting system. A key technical enhancement is that rounding inaccuracies are now permitted in the EXTENDED profile, which was not allowed in earlier versions and could cause validation issues for some use cases.
Because of these changes, organisations using the ZUGFeRD EXTENDED profile are strongly advised to upgrade to version 2.3 so that their invoices remain compatible with both German and French requirements. The new version and related documentation can be downloaded from FeRD’s official site: ZUGFeRD 2.3 download page.
