Australia Allocates $3.6 Million to Mandate E-Invoicing Adoption
Australia allocates $3.6 million under its Digital Business Plan to mandate e-invoicing for Commonwealth agencies, supporting nationwide digital transformation and economic recovery.
The Australian Government has announced a new Digital Business Plan aimed at accelerating economic recovery, including a $3.6 million AUD allocation to support the mandatory adoption of electronic invoicing.
Under the broader plan, nearly $800 million AUD has been committed to helping businesses adopt digital technologies, improve productivity, and create jobs.
E-Invoicing Mandate for Government Agencies
A key measure within the plan requires all Commonwealth government agencies to adopt e-invoicing by 1 July 2022. The objective is to drive uptake across supply chains by encouraging businesses that trade with government entities to transition to structured electronic invoicing.
The Government also confirmed it will consult on extending mandatory e-invoicing requirements to businesses more broadly, though no binding timeline has yet been announced.
Part of the JobMaker Digital Business Plan
The initiative forms part of the JobMaker Digital Business Plan, introduced by then Prime Minister Scott Morrison as part of Australia’s post-pandemic recovery strategy.
The plan recognizes that many businesses rapidly digitized during COVID-19 and aims to build on that momentum by:
- Supporting digital skills development
- Expanding 5G infrastructure
- Strengthening cybersecurity and trust frameworks
- Promoting regulatory technology innovation
- Enabling electronic document execution and virtual meetings
Long-Term Digital Economy Vision
The e-invoicing mandate aligns with Australia’s ambition to become a leading digital economy by 2030. By standardizing invoice exchange and encouraging structured digital processes, the Government anticipates significant cost savings and productivity gains across both public and private sectors.
