New South Wales has announced that all NSW public sector agencies must adopt e-invoicing for transactions up to AUD 1 million starting 1 January 2022. This move positions NSW as one of the first states to advance electronic invoicing adoption ahead of Australia’s broader national rollout.

The mandate applies to goods and services transactions valued up to AUD 1 million, regardless of category, and covers all NSW public entities.

Earlier Than the Federal Rollout

The NSW initiative precedes the Commonwealth-wide e-invoicing requirement, which takes effect on 1 July 2022 across Australia. By implementing the mandate six months earlier, NSW aims to accelerate digital adoption within public sector procurement and influence wider supply chain participation.

Expected Benefits

The NSW Government expects the policy to:

  • Improve operational efficiency
  • Reduce paperwork and manual processing
  • Minimize human errors
  • Shorten payment cycles
  • Deliver budget savings

Both suppliers and government buyers are expected to benefit from faster, more accurate invoice processing.

Flexible Transition for Suppliers

Once the mandate takes effect, suppliers will have the option to submit invoices electronically to NSW agencies while still being allowed to retain existing invoicing methods during the transition period.

By moving ahead of the national schedule, New South Wales is reinforcing Australia’s broader push toward structured digital invoicing and setting the pace for increased adoption across public and private sectors.
